What is the meaning of Lent

Lent is a period of fasting, moderation, and self-denial traditionally observed by Catholics and some Protestant denominations. It begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter Sunday. The length of the Lenten fast was established in the 4th century as 46 days (40 days, not counting Sundays). During Lent, participants eat sparingly or give up a particular food or habit. It’s not uncommon for people to give up smoking during Lent, or to swear off watching television or eating candy or telling lies. It’s six weeks of self-discipline.

Lent began as a way for Catholics to remind themselves of the value of repentance. The austerity of the Lenten season was seen as similar to how people in the Old Testament fasted and repented in sackcloth and ashes (Esther 4:1-3; Jeremiah 6:26; Daniel 9:3).

However, over the centuries Lenten observances have developed a much more “sacramental” value. Many Catholics believe that giving something up for Lent is a way to attain God’s blessing. But the Bible teaches that grace cannot be earned; grace is “the gift of righteousness” (Romans 5:17). Also, Jesus taught that fasting should be done discreetly: “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen” (Matthew 6:16-18)

Fasting can be a good thing, and God is pleased when we repent of sinful habits. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with setting aside some time to focus on Jesus’ death and resurrection. However, repenting of sin is something we should be doing every day of the year, not just for the 46 days of Lent.

If a anyone wishes to observe Lent, he or she is free to do so. The key is to focus on repenting of sin and consecrating oneself to God. Lent should not be a time of boasting of one’s sacrifice or trying to earn God’s favor or increasing His love. God’s love for us could not be any greater than it already is.

May the power of His resurrection and life be with you all, always..

After Hurricane Sandy!

Hello everyone, First of thanks to be our God, Creator and Savior Jesus Christ for His great Protection throughout this storm! I’m reminded of the words from a song that we sing in our Church, “What a faithful God I’ve, What a Faithful God! He’s our beacon in the storm!”

We were safe and did not loose electricity; that night I was in for emergency duty at our Rescue Squad and took some calls. God was with us there as well with my colleagues and friends in the squad building. Many people have lost power and spending nights at home this time is tough; the power companies are doing their best to restore the power. Our state New Jersey is badly hit, people are posting photos, updates via social media.

Keep our state and town in your prayers. Jesus is our strong tower and we’ll find refuge in Him always, because He’s ever so faithful!

Be blessed and stay safe..

Friends- char yaar!

Last evening was wonderful! Managed to meet friends after 10-12 years and had a lovely time seeing them, their children and catching up! The best part was we could pick up from where we left off as if we’d never parted! I think that’s what friends are!!

Thanks to Divesh, who never forgets to call and meet, he’s a catalyst in gathering us together every-time.  It was refreshing to see kids getting together and exchanging tweeter and Facebook IDs, times have changed!

Cheers again to these lovely friends and thank you for that breeze of warmth!

Home sweet Home!

Yesterday one of our friends completed purchase of their first home and invited my wife and me to come pray. What a wonderful testimony of God’s faithfulness in their life! Lord God Almighty is the giver of all good things and He has blessed this wonderful family with a lovely home. I shared from Ps. 116-5-9, which describes how great our God is and how he defends, saves, supports us.

Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; Yes, our God is merciful. The Lord preserves the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me.Return to your rest, O my soul, For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.For You have delivered my soul from death, My eyes from tears, And my feet from falling.I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

After the prayer, we and some of other friends as well toured their house which they will call now as their Home!

It’s so wonderful to share the joy and be part of their testimony. Praise to our dear Lord Jesus Christ! Be blessed today!

Hello world!

What a wonderful day today! It rained heavily last night and today everything looked washed and beautiful. As I was reading my meditative reading from Rom 12, the one thing came up as a bolt of light was the vs. 18

Here Paul encourages to believers in Rome as well as people in this time “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. ”  What a thought, how important it is for us to make that effort, as far as possible, as much as depends on US, the onus is on us! We get caught up with the fact that others should change, make effort around u.

Word of God is truth and does spell it clearly! Hope you feel the same way as I feel and let’s make this place a better place by doing our part FIRST!

Have a God filled day!
